Client
C2 Smart Light is a Finnish company that provides outdoor and interior lighting control systems. Their solutions are widely used in parks, streets, and stadiums, enabling customers to monitor and control lighting devices anytime, anywhere.
Challenge
Launched over 10 years ago, the client’s web application has remained unchanged since then, with no updates, patches, or enhancements. The solution was hard to scale, had an outdated user interface, and lacked modern functionality. C2 Smart Light approached SoftTeco with a request not only to modernize the software but also to introduce new features to meet customers’ demand.

Solution
C2 Smart Light is an IoT product that allows its users to control lighting devices remotely. It enables not only turning devices on and off but also managing the dimming level, making lighting adjustments, and monitoring device status.
The customers can create control programs for specific lighting networks. Such programs include automatic light intensity adjustment based on the season, time of day, natural light level, and other environmental factors, so the lighting devices do not have to run at full power all the time. It can cut energy consumption by 20% and reduce CO₂ emissions.
Today, the product provides a user-friendly and informative interface. With an integrated map, C2 Smart Light customers can instantly see all their connected devices and manage them with a few clicks.

How it works
The frontend of a lighting management web application included a set of widgets that allowed users to retrieve data from devices and adjust lighting configuration. SoftTeco introduced a comprehensive dashboard to centralize data views which facilitates managing smart bulbs, LED panels, and light strips. It contains analytics on the connected devices, the lighting management panel, and the field device status indicators.
In addition, our team completely redesigned apps’ user interface, making it more intuitive and easier to use. We analyzed the existing controls, optimized and regrouped them, and then created a modern, user-friendly interface that significantly simplifies the light control process and reduces training costs for new users.
From the backend, the biggest issue with the existing system was its lack of scalability. SoftTeco engineered a high-performance intermediary backend that serves as the system’s new core. We chose this option to offload complex business logic from the legacy environment and help the client cut development costs.
The development of a new backend resolved the scalability problem and allowed us to add new features to the system. Now it can handle high-concurrency demands and enables app enhancements without risking the stability of the direct device control.
The client also requested to make the system TALQ-compatible. It turned out to be a real challenge since the SoftTeco team did not have access to real TALQ devices. Nevertheless, our developers successfully resolved the issue by working only with the integration protocol and the TALQ test tool. The system is now fully compatible with TALQ and can be used to manage TALQ devices.

Results
SoftTeco has successfully updated and scaled the existing smart lighting system and delivered all necessary implementations on time and in line with the requirements. We are glad that we were able to work on a challenging IoT development project and contribute to smart city development.
