Challenge
Roaming Hunger Inc. is a startup company that launched its services in order to help people find and monitor their favorite mobile food vendors and explore new ones around them. The company now provides information on over 5,000 street food vendors in West Hollywood, including information on their current location and schedule. The app also facilitates the truck booking process and offers various services, including corporate and public catering.
The project started as an iOS application in 2011 and in 2014, the client launched an Android app. At the same time, the client contacted SoftTeco to help expand the functionality of the existing iOS application, optimize its design, and make it more user-centric.

Solution
Roaming Hunger is a user-friendly and intuitive application that connects users with food trucks in the area. The app features several sections, such as vendor search and filtering, vendor list, real-time vendor locations displayed on an integrated map, and vendor booking. Users can access menus with photos and add trucks to the “Favorites” list.

How it works
For its time, the application was considered highly innovative as it was written in custom code and had several interesting features. Since its main goal was to connect users with vendors in a specific area, the app needed to have an integrated map and an option to sort through vendors. To carry that out, SoftTeco used the Core Location framework that helped display the real-time location of vendors on the native Apple map. Users were also able to zoom in and out to get a better view of available vendors and their locations.
Once a user found a needed vendor, they could add a vendor to the “Favorites” list and see the full menu with images. For improved user experience, our team ensured that the app design is responsive and supports several iOS versions (iPhone 5 and older versions, more specifically). Considering the drastic difference in screen sizes and resolutions between iPhone 5 and iPhone 4, our team was extra attentive to the app’s design.
SoftTeco incorporated the search and filtering feature so users can look for specific vendors in the truck listing. We also added the push notification feature so users are notified when a specific truck is in the area or is available.
Results
Today, Roaming Hunger is a popular food truck booking app that provides its services all over the USA and in several other countries. We were glad to be part of this ambitious project during its early development stages and to help the client shape his vision of the app.
