The very first use cases of AI included its application in the development of smart homes when an AI would open your garage door or heat water for your morning tea. Now, we have Midjourney and AI creates digital art that is sometimes undistinguishable from the one created by humans. And it was only a matter of time before AI would be used to craft copy.
So here we are, with Jasper AI being proclaimed as the best AI writing tool that makes writers around the world nervously chuckle. But is it really so good? Does it even have any flaws? With hundreds of overwhelmingly positive reviews, it’s easy to get a bit confused. Hence, let’s try finding out whether this robot can really replace us writers in the future or if it’s too much to expect from this robot.
What is Jasper AI, anyway?
Jasper AI is an artificial intelligence writing tool that uses GPT-3 to generate human-like content. In other words, it is a smart robot that can create various types of copy in a way humans do – aka in a very natural and readable way. This means, if you put two pieces of copy next to each other, you’ll have a really hard time telling which one was written by a human and which one by Jasper AI.
It is important to step back here and explain what GPT-3 is. GPT-3 stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 and is an autoregressive language model created by OpenAI. This model uses deep learning technology to generate human-like text and what’s awesome about it is the fact that the model can actually train itself. And since GPT-3 is the most powerful AI-based language model today, no wonder Jasper AI uses it to create stunningly good copy.
Now, getting back to the Jasper AI review.
How does it work?
We won’t explain in depth all its algorithms – instead, we’d like to walk you through the process of creating copy from the user’s point of view.
First, you have to choose a template from the 50+ templates available. These templates include the PSA framework, AIDA framework, blog post, email subject line, Quora answers, product descriptions, and many, many more (we’ll have a look at these templates in more detail a bit later). By selecting the right template, you are guiding Jasper toward the desired format and style of the copy. You can also select the desired tone of voice so your copy 100% hits the target audience and corresponds to your vision.
Second, describe to Jasper what exactly you want to write. This step is crucial since the more information (context) you provide to the robot, the better the outcome will be. So it’s important to be specific and include relevant keywords if needed. A good idea would be to undergo the free Jasper AI Bootcamp training before using the tool AI so you get the most out of it.
Third, after selecting the template and informing Jasper of what copy you expect it to deliver, let the magic happen and watch Jasper generate a stellar copy in accordance with all your needs.
How easy does it sound?
The biggest Jasper AI features
There is a plethora of smart writing tools out there (Content at Scale being the most known and powerful alternative, for example) so why does all the hype go to Jasper AI? The main reason for that is a set of its features that leaves writers in awe. Let’s look at them in more detail.
Templates
As we already mentioned, there are over 50 templates to choose from. These templates cover the most various writing needs and include:
- Blog posts (including the headline, intro, and conclusion);
- Product description;
- Explain it to a child: Jasper will rephrase your information in 1-3 sentences that are incredibly easy to understand;
- Facebook ad headline;
- Google ads description;
- Instagram post captions;
- Quora answers;
- Engaging questions;
And many, many more. With the help of templates, you can quickly and easily fulfill your writing needs, especially if your work involves social media management.
Speed of work
One of the main unique selling points of Jasper AI is its ability to produce content 5X faster than a human copywriter does. This feature is already impressive by itself but one more thing about Jasper’s speed of work is also how it helps get over the writing block.
By having several great options (generated in a minute or two) at your fingertips, you can fuel your own creativity. And this, without a doubt, is a very valuable thing for any writer.
Built-in SEO and plagiarism check
Any writer knows that it’s not enough to produce good copy today – you also have to make it SEO-friendly and plagiarism-free. Jasper AI got you covered due to its integrations with Surfer SEO and Copyscape (a plagiarism checker).
A good thing about Surfer SEO integration is that it can help you write content that will rank high in Google. A bad thing about it is that it’s an additional paid add-on. That means, a Surfer SEO integration is not included in the standard Jasper’s set of features and you need to pay for both Jasper AI and for Surfer SEO subscription in order to use it. It might not be too bad though if you generate a lot of content that constantly requires SEO optimization but for other copywriters, this might be an unnecessary option.
As for plagiarism check, it’s also a paid add-on. Plus, reviewers claim that it’s not 100% accurate so you might want to use free or other paid alternatives instead.
Jasper recipes
Since Jasper is a robot (though an incredibly smart one), it needs Commands in order to understand what you want from it. You can craft the commands yourself – or you can use Jasper Recipes to simply guide Jasper through the creation of the needed content.
The bad news is that Jasper Recipes are available in the Boss Mode only – we’ll review it a bit later. The good news is that Recipes can save you lots of time and are really easy and convenient to use.
A Jasper Recipe is a list of commands where each command relates to a certain aspect of your copy. For example, you may select a “Write a blog post” Recipe and it can include such commands as “Write blog post title ideas” and “Write about {OUTLINE_ITEM_4}. As you see, a Recipe will not allow you to forget anything and will make sure you receive the needed content exactly how you want it.
Jasper AI cost
Jasper AI offers two pricing plans: the Starter and the Boss Mode. As you can guess from its name, the Boss Mode plan offers you more capabilities and powerful features but even with the Starter plan, you can greatly boost your writing.
An important note: there are 5 days of free trial and after 5 days, you will be charged in accordance with the selected pricing plan. You pay on a monthly basis but the annual subscription is available as well. Now, let’s have a look at Jasper AI pricing in detail.
The Starter plan
The Jasper AI Starter plan is great for writing short copy such as ads, headlines, or product descriptions. This plan does not include an option to craft long copies (i.e. articles) and it does not have Jasper Recipes and Commands (you have to create commands yourself).
The Starter plan includes:
- 20,000/month (you will not be able to generate more than 20,000 per month with this plan);
- 50+ writing templates;
- Unlimited number of project folders;
- Chat support;
- Access to the AI Copywriter’s Community;
- Unlimited user logins;
- Support for 25+ languages.
The price: starts from $29/month. In the case of an annual subscription, the Starter plan price starts from $24/month.
The Boss Mode plan
This plan offers you to create both short and long copies while offering all the perks from the Starter plan and more. The Boss Mode includes:
- 50,000/month;
- 50+ writing templates;
- Jasper Recipes;
- Jasper Commands;
- Unlimited number of project folders;
- Chat support;
- Access to the AI Copywriter’s Community;
- Unlimited user logins;
- Support for 25+ languages.
The price: starts from $59/month. In the case of an annual subscription, the Boss Mode plan price starts from $49/month.
An important note 2: Jasper offers customization of your plans for an extra fee in case you reach the initial word limit. For example, if you select the Boss Mode and need more than 50K words, you can throw in an additional 30,000 for $30.
The pros and cons of Jasper AI
By now it may seem that Jasper AI is a perfect tool that does not have any flaws and will soon replace all writers. However, it’s not really true and Jasper does have several flaws to be aware of.
The pros of Jasper AI
Though we’ve already talked about all the great benefits that Jasper brings, let’s review them one more time:
- High speed of work and high quality of generated copy;
- Assistance with writer’s block and creativity boost;
- Suitable for a vast variety of use cases due to 50+ templates;
- Affordable cost of both plans;
- Easy to use, has great navigation, and is very user-centric.
In short, Jasper AI is a very user-friendly platform that charges moderate fees and offers a great number of features. But what about the flip side of the coin?
The cons of Jasper AI
While there are not so many, there are still a few considerations to keep in mind. They can be especially important for those specializing in long copy that requires thorough fact-checking and proofreading:
- The content still differs from human-generated content by the tone of voice and overall impression. It lacks “humanness”, that’s the best way to put it.
- Jasper does not do fact-checking of the content so some stats or data might be outdated or irrelevant.
- Jasper does not provide sources where it takes information so you can’t really double-check whether the source is reliable.
- Some users claim that Jasper’s plagiarism checker is not 100% accurate so it’s recommended to check for plagiarism with Grammarly (or similar tools) as well.
As you can see, Jasper AI is great for creating short-form copy but with long-form copy, you will have to double-check the result (which means investing additional time and resources). Thus, the main thing to remember here is that Jasper is a valuable writing assistant. But it would be wrong to call it a full-fledged robotic copywriter capable of independently crafting content since you will need to interfere anyways.
Jasper AI alternatives
One more thing that users notice is that there are actually several pretty good alternatives that come with more reasonable pricing while offering similar features. Below, we will look at the main Jasper competitors.
Content at Scale
Content at Scale, known as CaS, is considered one of the most serious competitors of Jasper AI and some writers even claim that CaS is superior. Why is that?
First, CaS is aimed at creating long-form copy and it marvelously does so from a single long-tail keyword. You heard it right. You give this platform a single keyword and within minutes, it produces a 1,500+ article, a meta description, and a title for it.
Wow.
Second, Content at Scale also provides you with a content brief checklist to help you make sure your article contains everything you want in your article. This is a really nice and thoughtful feature that many writers will appreciate.
Third, this platform uses not only GPT-3 but two other natural language algorithms so you can rest assured the quality of the content will be high. As for the pricing, CaS comes with three options to choose from:
- Starter: 20 posts/month at $500 (approximately $0.018/word);
- Scaling: 50 posts/month at $1,000 (approximately $0.015/word);
- Agency: 100 posts/month at $1,500 (approximately $0.01/word).
Copy.ai
Copy.ai is a very budget-friendly AI writing tool that allows you to create both short-form and long-form copy via a user-friendly interface. Users claim that the quality of the content generated by Copy.ai is really good even though it has to be checked by an editor before you upload it anywhere. But the same goes for any AI-generated content, right?
Copy.ai offers a huge variety of templates to choose from. They include Facebook link descriptions, LinkedIn ads, Blog posts, a Keyword generator, and many more. As well, Copy.ai allows you to customize the desired tone of voice and is overall very similar to Jasper AI in terms of the process of content generation.
One of the best things about Copy.ai is its pricing. Surprisingly, it does have a Free plan (yes, 100% free, no hidden rocks) and the Pro plan which comes at $49/month. The features that are included in the Pro plan (and that don’t come with the Free plan) are:
- Support of 25+ languages;
- Blog Wizard Tool;
- Access to the newest features.
But overall, even the Free plan is highly convenient though it limits you to 2,000 words/month. But it may not be an issue in case you need a short-form copy from time to time. Otherwise, the Pro plan is here for you with all the great features that Copy.ai has to offer.
So will Jasper AI replace copywriters?
We’ve finally come to the question many people ask these days. And the answer is…
No.
No, Jasper AI won’t 100% replace copywriters and writers because it’s still a robot that is here to assist, not to replace people. While it is indeed able to produce amazing copy in mere minutes, it lacks creativity, wittiness, and humanness. Not to mention the fact that you need to double-check its work for plagiarism and stats.
However, Jasper AI is a highly valuable asset that can greatly help agencies, freelancers, and copywriting professionals decrease their work burden and get some fresh new ideas from Jasper. So we will for sure see more AI-generated copy on the Internet and might we say, that’s not bad at all.
